Author Richard Bach followed up Jonathan Livingston Seagull with Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah. In real life Richard Bach would spend a summer barnstorming, flying around the Mid-west in an old bi-plane, landing in farmer's fields, and getting permission give rides in his bi-plane and sleep in the field at night. Illusions is the story of what could have happened one summer when Richard Bach met another barnstormer, Donald Shimoda, who was a slightly more evolved human being. The rest of the story is about their adventures together one summer, and the things that Richard learned from Donald Shimoda. One of the really nice features of the book is it is peppered with quotes that became learnings for Richard, all taken from Donald's Messiah's Handbook. Some quotes are a little out there, but most of them are powerful and on target. Here are two examples: "Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they are yours." "You are never given a wish without the power to make it come true. You may have to work for it however." The book is really a tale about change and transformation, set in story form. If you promise not to read ahead, it ends like no other book I have ever read. I give it 4 out of 5 bookmarks. |
