10 Easy Steps To Making A Gel Candle

Author: Matt Ream

Candles were once used primarily as a light source, but now they are commonly used as decorations, scented indulgences and for romance. While many consumers prefer to purchase candles at retail or online outlets, true crafters enjoy making gel candle themselves. To those do-it-yourselfers, making gel candles can be done by following the 10 simple steps outlined below.

Step 1. Gain a clear understanding of candlemaking safety, which would include dealing with hot wax, never leaving your workspace unattended, what to do if problems arise, etc. Crafters can learn more about making gel candle safety on the labels of the products purchased.

Step 2. Determine what type of fragrance and coloring, if any, you will include while making gel candles. Once you have made a final decision, purchase all of the ingredients before you begin.

Step 3. Obtain a heating source, which will serve as a double boiler to melt the wax. Because wax does not actually boil, as water does, when it is hot, you may use a thermometer to assess the temperature of the wax. Continue to melt according to the instructional label on the product.

Step 4. In order to avoid bubbling in the wax, use a stirring stick to stir the was regularly while melting. Being very careful while stirring hot wax is very important because it can cause burns very quickly.

Step 5. Melt the wax according to the product instructions.

Step 6. Add coloring, fragrance and/or essential oils if desired. Caution should be used when mixing these products, so always be sure to follow safety precautions as noted on the label or in accordance with making gel candle guidelines.

Step 7. When making gel candle, you should pour the wax into a mold once it is melted.

Step 8. Make sure that your wick is the right size for the candle that you are making and have it ready to place into position before the candle begins to stiffen.

Step 9. Allow the candle to sit inside the mold until hardened. The desired sitting time should be outlined on either the wax product or the candle mold itself. If it is not, use your own judgment by lightly touching the candle to see if it has stiffened to feel like a normal candle. Do not touch the candle too soon or you may end up with a fingerprint in the design.

Step 10. When making gel candle is complete, carefully remove the finished product from the mold. Sitting times vary and, when making gel candle, be sure to follow the mold instructions so that you do not remove the candle too soon.

If you plan to give the candle as a gift, or sell it at your business, wrap the candle in decorative plastic with a ribbon at the top to seal the fragrance. If you plan to use the candle yourself, simply light it and enjoy!
