Managing your bathroom redesign project
I have a friend who is a teacher by profession and I think that I can say that she is able, practically minded and organised. If anyone was going to successfully project manage their own bathroom-remodeling project it would be her. Reality turned out quite different however.
My friend got herself organised by deciding what she wanted in her new bathroom and drawing detailed plans on squared paper. When she had researched the fixtures, fittings and accessories that she wanted and found the lowest prices available she turned her mind to hiring contractors to do the job.
Remodeling jobs to be managed
Here is the list my friend made to make sure that she didn't forget any of the tasks that needed to be done:
* Ensuring compliance with any legal requirements. * Remove and dispose of bathroom fixtures. * Bathroom design and styling. * Building works including moving walls and widows etc. * Finishing off interior walls and drying. * Electrical installation. * Plumbing installation. * Fit new bathroom fixtures. * Tile and seal walls. * Floor covering. * Correct any problems.
Now consider the list of skills that she needed for the bathroom remodel.
Bathroom redesign skill requirements
* Electrician * Carpenter * Plasterer * Builder * Glazier * Flooring specialist * Plumber
Where was she going to find all these workers? She used the Internet and the phone book and she asked around friends and neighbours for any recommendations but she found that she got the best results from asking the staff in her local bathroom showrooms. They seemed to know everyone that could do the job personally and often had an idea about how good they were too.
The project management begins
Making a plan of the project was the next thing to do and this is where it started to get difficult. Because there were so many people involved it wasn't easy to get everyone to agree to do things when my friend wanted them to do it. She wanted to get the project done during the school holidays when she would have more time but many of the contractors had children too and they wanted to go on holiday at that time.
In the end she came up with a project plan that everyone was happy with and she was pleased with herself for a job well done. Little did she know what was to come.
The problems had started
The Fitters stripped out the old bathroom furniture on time but the delivery of the new fixtures was delayed. The workers turned up on time to fit the new stuff but they had to be sent away and asked to come back when the delivery turned up. This had a knock on effect with the remainder of the project plan for the bathroom remodel and threw my friends carefully laid out plan into disarray.
Project management is difficult
If it could have gone wrong then it did. Or at least that's how it appeared to my friend. The bathtub was cracked and it had to be returned. They couldn't get another one for 4 weeks! The shower didn't work and the manufacturers had to fix it. The painter managed to flood the place and destroy the ceiling below.
It seemed like there was no end to it in sight, the original 10 day project turned into 12 weeks and it still wasn't quite complete then. I don't think that my friend will be doing this kind of thing again very soon.
Find someone to manage your remodeling project for you
If you are just about to start redesigning a bathroom you will be pleased to know that you don't have to do it yourself, no matter how much you may want to. You can hire a project manager to plan, coordinate and fix all the problems for you or you can do what I did and find someone who can do the entire job all by themselves. |
