Liposuction Procedure - The Process Of Removing Excess Fat

Author: Dean Shainin

Liposuction procedure removes excess fat from specific areas in the body including the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms and legs. Liposuction procedure can also be done on the face, neck and chin and to remove excessive fats in the male breast.

Before getting a liposuction procedure, you should discuss with your doctor your medical history. Your doctor will also advise you on how to best prepare yourself for a liposuction procedure.

In a liposuction procedure, the doctor makes incisions in the skin to allow the insertion of the cannula, a thin tube attached to the machine that suctions the fat from the body. If you are having large amounts of fat removed or more than one liposuction procedure, you most likely will have to stay at the hospital overnight.

Two common techniques in liposuction procedure are tumescent liposuction and ultrasound-assisted liposuction. This fluid, which contains anesthetic and the drug epinephrine, reduces pain and blood loss. In ultrasound-assisted liposuction, the tip of the cannula generates ultrasound waves that liquefy fat before it is suctioned.

After liposuction procedure, expect discomfort, some pain, swelling, numbness and bruising. Liposuction procedure is ideal for individuals who are in good physical condition but have unwanted or excess deposits of fat in specific body parts that are resistant to regular exercise.

How Abdominal Liposuction Works

Abdominal liposuction is one of the most common liposuctions performed. Men and women undergo the procedure in order to eliminate the excess fat in their abdominal areas.

Abdominal fat is highly resistant to exercise so you may try different abdominal exercises to remove the flab but with little success. Your surgeon will explain how abdominal liposuction works and what are the potential risks involved.

Your surgeon will also have to assess your weight, skin, muscle and fat distribution.

Abdominal Liposuction Procedure

Depending on what your surgery requires, your surgeon will give you either a local anesthesia or a general anesthesia before starting the surgery. There are several techniques to the abdominal liposuction procedure. In super-wet abdominal liposuction and tumescent abdominal liposuction, the surgeon first injects a solution into the target area prior to actual surgery. This solution not only makes fat easier to remove but also minimizes blood loss and post-surgery side effects such as swelling.

Another method in abdominal liposuction is called the ultrasound-assisted liposuction, which utilizes sound waves to break down fat. This method also reduces the loss of blood during the surgery and post-surgery bruising. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction is especially effective to treat fibrous parts of the body, for instance the male breast and the upper area of the abdomen.

Your surgeon will recommend the method of abdominal liposuction for you based on the specific area where fat is to be removed and the volume of fat to be eliminated.
