Projects Against Sex Tours

Author: Verapol Chaiyapin

Sex tours are becoming more and more popular. In fact, there are thousands of prostitutes and tourists engaging in sex tours each year. Some of the prostitutes could not afford to feed their families without being able to count on the money from the tourists. However, there are some people of the world that think sex tours should be illegal everywhere.

Most of the activists against sex tours are females and males that think the women involved in the prostitution are being degraded, abused, and even forced into prostitution. In some cases this is true. Many times the younger women involved are forced to be there by their families. They are either physically forced with abuse or made to feel guilty until they agree.

The projects against sex tours not only work to stop the degrading acts of prostitution. They also try to figure out other ways for the women involved to make money for their families. They set up jobs for these women and teach them self respect and dignity that does not come with prostitution. The projects are good at getting some women out of the cycle of prostitution.

The countries that the prostitution is taking place in have mixed feelings about it all. On one hand, they realize the women are not always being treated fairly. On the other hand they are realizing that the tourism brings in local money for their economy and they may need that money to survive as a country altogether. So, sometimes they are encouraging and sometimes they are not.
