Dish Network vs Direct TV

Author: Nick Destefano

So are you thinking of switching to cable, but don't know where to start in finding out the differences between Dish Network and Direct TV? Both services are overall a good provider and cost is very similar, so it basically comes down to which type of programming channels you are interested in.

It's very similar to the satellite radio competition today from Sirius vs. XM. Both are good services and price is very comparitive. It boils down to if you want Howard Stern, NFL games on Sirius vs. Oprah Winfrey, MLB games on XM.

Below are DISH Network vs Direct TV Comparisons and Differences:

* Free Offers: Both Direct TV and the Dish Network offer new customers a free satellite dish, receivers, professional installation, and a month or two of free programming.

* Equipment Pricing and Ownership:

Direct Tv: The free equipment is owned by you so if something would happen to the equipment, you would have to purchase it at full price which can range up to $700 depending on how many receivers you have.

DISH Network: Unlike DirecTv, DISH Network owns the equipment so if there is anything that would happen to the equipment, you would not be liable for purchasing it at full price. It's basically like having an insurance policy.

* Programming Pricing: Very similar, however Dish Network now offers their cheapest package at $19.99 compared to Direct TV's $29.99.

* Installation Times: On average both providers take 2-7 days with Dish Network averaging a little better response times.

* DVR & HDTV Capability: Both providers support DVR and HDTV.

* Local Channels Support: Both but check programming packages.

Other Differences:

Direct TV offers up to 250 channel choices vs. the Dish Network's 500 channels, with DISH Network offering more international channels. Direct TV has sole rights to NFL Sunday ticket, however this package can range from $200 extra per year.

Overall it appears both providers are very similar, but it might seem that Dish Network has a few more advantages than Direct TV if you're not looking for the NFL Sunday ticket.
