Backelor Parties, Are You Sure?

Author: Gary Tomlinson

Why Backelor Parties?

(Although the correct term is bachelor parties, we'll go with backelor parties instead in this article). The custom of holding backelor parties is very old, dating back to Spartan soldiers. The groom to be would enjoy a meal and drinking (among other things), just something we would think of as a night on the town with the guys. The whole idea was to celebrate the bond these soldiers shared, and it was a way for the groom to reaffirm his commitment and loyalty to his fellow warriors, even if he would no longer be able to join them in "painting the town red".

Today's backelor parties often carry on some of the same type of rowdy, boisterous, bawdy traditions that those ancient Spartans did. Drinking, racy movies, strippers, "unusual" invitations and party novelties, they're all there. Instead of sitting around the campfire, today's backelor party revelers may sit around the TV or the card table. Their alcohol is served in glasses and cold bottles. But the ancient spirit still remains. In the end, guys haven't really changed, and their parties haven't either.

But in more recent years, some of those traditions have started to change. Now, many "couples" parties are held, where the emphasis is on the soon-to-be-married couples common interests and new life together, a far cry from the backelor parties we all have heard about. In many cases, the couples parties are held in lieu of a bridal shower as well.

Some of these couples parties center around a particular gift theme - something the couple may need for their house, a large chore they need help with, or even gifts representing a common interest they have. Either way, many brides to be will certainly consider these a more evolved form of celebration than the backelor parties of old.
